What's the Difference Between Heat Pump and Air Conditioner Maintenance?

Learn Which You Have in Your Home and How to Care for It

It’s okay. Most people simply refer to the big metal box as “the air conditioner.” You’re not alone. Do you know if you have an air conditioner or a heat pump? Let’s go over the differences. We’ll also review proper heat pump and air conditioner maintenance. Let’s get started!

How Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps Work

These function in essentially the same way. They move air from one location to another. They extract humidity from the air to reduce the temperature. Contrary to the understanding of most people, cooling system do not add cool air. It’s more accurate to describe them as removing heat.
In the most basic terms the steps are:

  1. The cooling system moves a refrigerant liquid in a closed system of coils.
  2. The liquid evaporates and condenses over and over again.
  3. When hot air moves over the cold evaporator coils, the liquid absorbs the heat. Here it changes from a liquid to a gaseous state.
  4. The cooling system converts the refrigerant gas into a liquid form to start the process over again.

The biggest difference between the two is a heat pump can reverse its function. An air conditioner is used during warmer weather. A heat pump is used all year during warmer and cooler weather.
Some people only have a heat pump. If you have an air conditioner, you probably have a furnace for heating. In some areas, the weather doesn’t require a furnace because the temperature doesn’t remain cold for long periods. Some people may get through the occasional cold snap with a ductless or portable unit.

Service Plan – Easy Air Conditioner Maintenance

We cannot emphasize the importance of regular heat pump and air conditioner maintenance enough. Regular service helps your machine run at peak efficiency. A technician will inspect, test, clean and lubricate all the relevant system parts. This should be done, ideally, twice a year.
Most Alabama and Georgia residents like to schedule air conditioner maintenance in the spring before the weather gets too hot. Many like to schedule air conditioner maintenance in the fall after a summer’s hard work.
Talk to your trusted HVAC contractor, Energy Savers, about your usage, equipment and what’s best for you.
Our team will determine if excess wear and tear is present and go over any recommended repairs. When the equipment runs as designed, it will often reach peak efficiency.
This saves you the most money on energy bills. The difference in energy consumption of a maintained heat pump versus an ignored one may range from 10 to 25 percent.
For the most convenience and savings, join a preventative air conditioner maintenance plan. Energy Savers offers three levels of its Priority Service Plans to meet your needs and budget.
