Heating and Air Helpful Hints

Heating and air tips

Get the Most from this Critical System

Your heating and air conditioning system may not be something you think about often. You click the switch on your thermostat, air comes out of the vents and everyone’s happy. Well, until something breaks, or a sky-high electric bill lets you know there could be a repair in your future.
Good news! When you show some love for your heating and air conditioning system on a regular basis, it will love you back with many seasons of reliable and efficient service. Read on to learn more about what you can do to keep your home comfortable.

Heating and Air Indoor Hints

You can perform some of the best maintenance tasks for your heating and air conditioning system right inside your home. Try these quick, easy, and affordable ideas:

Remove excess dust from your floors, furnishings and HVAC vents

The more dust and debris you can keep out of your system, the less wear and tear it will experience as it operates. As a bonus, your air will be cleaner, too.

Replace your air filter at least every 90 days

No matter how diligently you dust, you still need a filter to catch the particles you miss when you clean. Eventually, even the best filter will stop pollutants less effectively.
A saturated filter also forces your HVAC system to work harder to circulate air through your home. In homes with pets or smokers, filters may need to be replaced monthly.
Next time an Energy Savers team member visits for a tune-up, repair or replacement, ask for a filter recommendation. In some cases, more concentrated filters actually impede your system. If the filter is incompatible, your HVAC system may have to strain to push air through it.

Control sunlight with curtains or blinds

The sun can add a considerable amount of heat to some rooms. If your air conditioner struggles to keep up, use window coverings to give your system a break. In winter, the same sunlight can take off the chill when you pull back your curtains and blinds. Depending on the direction of the sun, it may benefit you to capture the warmth in the morning, then close the curtains to “trap” the heat inside later in the day.

Install ceiling fans

Ceiling fans work with your heating and air conditioning system to circulate even temperatures throughout a room. They also help you feel cooler, which allows you to forego your air conditioner on the occasional fall “heat wave.” Make sure to change the direction your fans rotate when the seasons change.

Outdoor Heating and Air Hints

When you think about indoor comfort, don’t forget about the outdoor components of your heating and air conditioning system!

  • Keep your outdoor unit free of leaves, branches, and other yard debris.
  • Leave at least two feet of clearance on all sides and on top of the unit.
  • Check for leaks, excess condensation and worn insulation.
  • When you upgrade to a new AC unit, be sure it’s out of direct sun to help keep it cool.

Consider Heating and Air Professional Maintenance

For greater savings, invest in a heating and air conditioning tune-up. A trained technician will clean and inspect all components in detail and identify small problems before they grow into big ones. He or she may also offer recommendations for products to improve efficiency and comfort in your home.
